Europe Day was celebrated in Bijelo Polje, where citizens, local government representatives, and the European Union gathered for a series of events dedicated to Montenegro’s European path and the contribution of local communities to the EU integration process in the largest municipality in the northern part of the country.
The central city celebration of Europe Day was opened by EU Ambassador to Montenegro Johan Sattler and Mayor of Bijelo Polje Petar Smolović.

Ambassador Satler emphasized that Europe Day represents “a reminder of what our societies can achieve when they choose cooperation and integration.”
“The real effects of European reforms and development are seen precisely at the local level – in municipalities like Bijelo Polje – where people’s quality of life is concretely improved and where real opportunities must reach every citizen,” said Satler.

Mayor of Bijelo Polje Petar Smolović expressed his satisfaction that Europe Day – May 9th – begins in Bijelo Polje, highlighting that the municipality has always been a leader in positive change and intends to continue doing so, particularly in the field of environmental protection.
He emphasized the importance of Chapter 27, which presents numerous challenges, especially in the areas of wastewater management and the establishment of a Regional Recycling Center. Smolović stated that the plan is for Bijelo Polje to become a waste recycling hub for 12 northern municipalities, thereby avoiding the need for a traditional landfill.

Together with Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić, Ambassador Satler discussed with local community representatives the construction of a future wastewater treatment plant.
Responding to citizens’ questions, he highlighted the significance of this project for public health and environmental protection.
“A modern wastewater treatment plant is crucial for the well-being of Bijelo Polje residents. It protects water sources, supports economic development, and brings Montenegro closer to European Union standards,” said Satler.

During his visit, Ambassador Satler also spoke with local authorities about the construction of the future Regional Waste Processing Center, which represents a key component of Montenegro’s waste management reform.
The EU Ambassador described this project as “a great opportunity for Bijelo Polje to become a leader in sustainable development and green transition, creating new jobs and ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment.”
As part of the program, a discussion was organized with the Local Urban Group, civil sector representatives, and citizens involved in EU projects for sustainable local development. Additionally, a visit was made to the newly opened “EU & Point” information corner, a local EU information hub within the “Municipalities for the EU” project, located at the Nikoljac Sports Center.
