European Values in Action – Danilovgrad, Plav, and Andrijevica Mark Europe Day

EU i tacka

Danilovgrad, Plav, and Andrijevica celebrated Europe Day with a series of activities that demonstrated that European values are neither abstract nor distant—they are present in the everyday life of the community. Through joint efforts in cleaning public areas, environmental actions, and a spring fair, citizens of all generations confirmed that European values are lived and developed at the local level.

In Danilovgrad, a Spring Fair was organized, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the stands of the Embassies of Greece and Romania, and to enjoy the works of children from the “Irena Radović” Preschool, the NGO “Growing Together”, and the Danilovgrad Tourist Organization.

The fair was opened by Riccardo Serri, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro.

“I am happy to be in Danilovgrad, one of the first municipalities where we are marking Europe Day, which we will celebrate throughout the entire month and across Montenegro. Because European integration does not happen only in Brussels and Podgorica—it happens in every municipality, with every citizen, and through every step we take together. This is a time for unity, determination, and progress—because Montenegro’s future is European,” said Serri.

Deputy Mayor of Danilovgrad Bojan Pavićević emphasized that the celebration of Europe Day is just one of the many indicators of Danilovgrad’s dedication to the timeless values of the European Union.

In Plav, Europe Day was marked by a large environmental clean-up action of public spaces, Plav Lake, and the Vardište picnic area. Mayor Nihad Canović met with the Ambassador of Slovenia to Montenegro, Bernarda Gradišnik, who, along with her advisor, participated in the clean-up activity on behalf of the diplomatic corps and the EU Delegation.

“Europe Day marks the beginning of peace and unity in Europe. It has never been just a celebration of the historic Schuman Declaration adopted 75 years ago—it is a living reminder of what our societies can become if we choose cooperation over conflict. It proves that through dialogue, solidarity, and mutual support, we can build a stronger future together,” said Gradišnik.

In Andrijevica, citizens celebrated Europe Day through community beautification actions—planting cypress trees and flowers, cleaning the streets, and organizing a walk to the Knjaževac site. On behalf of the municipality, Saša Malovarićemphasized that by celebrating Europe Day, Andrijevica seeks to highlight the importance of environmental preservation, promotion of European values, and community engagement.

Orlando Fusco, Programme Manager of the EU Delegation to Montenegro, reminded that the EU is already present alongside Montenegro’s citizens—through investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, energy transition, and digitalization.

“Through EU funds, programs, and partnerships, we are already working with you—on roads, schools, hospitals, green energy, digital transformation, and support for youth and businesses. We are engaging experts who assist both the Government and local administrations in implementing reforms,” said Fusco.

In all three municipalities, a new “EU Info Point”—a space where citizens can learn about the European Union within their local communities—was officially opened as part of the ‘Municipalities for the EU’ project.

The EU Delegation to Montenegro and the Ministry of European Affairs, with the support of EU projects Europe House, EU4ME, and Municipalities for the EU, are celebrating the Month of Europe across the country from May 3 to May 30.

The goal of this year’s celebration is to bring European values closer to citizens through art, culture, education, play, and practical local actions—in every corner of Montenegro.
